Call for a Postdoctoral Fellowship / Neuroscience

  7. A position for Post-Doc Fellowship (Bolsa de Investigação) is open in Fundação D. Anna de Sommer Champalimaud e Dr. Carlos Montez Champalimaud (Champalimaud Foundation) in the context of the project “Transnational research projects to accelerate diagnosis and/or explore disease progression and mechanisms of rare diseases: Pathophysiology of dystonia – role of gene-environment interaction and common pathophysiological pathways” financed by solely National Funds through Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia (FCT).

    Duration
    The Fellowship will have a duration of 12 months, , starting on January 2021 with the possibility of renewal for an additional period of 12 months, and then a second period of 6 months not exceeding the end date of the project June 30th, 2023 in exclusive dedication, as regulated by Lei nº40/2004, from August 18th, subsequently amended and republished by Decree-law no. 202/2012 of August 27th, of the human resources regulation of FCT (https://www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/docs/FellowshipHolderStatute2013.pdf) and of the fellowship regulations of the Champalimaud Foundation.

    Subject of activities
    The select candidate will perform: – Behavioral evaluation using inertial measurement units in animal models of dystonia – Measure activity of striatal medium spiny neurons using microscopy and calcium sensors imaging; – Application of several surgical techniques in mice, in the hindlimb and in the central nervous system – Use techniques to manipulate neural activity (optogenetics and/or chemogenetics) while assessing animal behaviour – Presentation of posters and oral communications in national and international meetings and writing of scientific papers; – Participation in the regular scientific activities at the Champalimaud Centre for the Unknown;

    Selecting Criteria
    The candidate should have a PhD in Neuroscience, Neurobiology, Biological Sciences or related areas. An ideal candidate should have experience with animal behavioral testing; excellent surgical skills, including stereotaxic injections and/or implantations of lenses and/or electrodes. Skills in in vivo electrophysiology and/or in vivo calcium imaging will be valued. The candidate should have experience with viral and transgenic technology. Experience with programming and data analysis techniques (using MATLAB or Python) will be positively appreciated.
    It is expected that the candidate has creative problem-solving skills and have demonstrated interest in neurology and neurological diseases
    Fluency in scientific English is indispensable, both in written and oral expression.

    Monthly Stipend
    1600,00 euros per months, as determined by FCT, I.P. for Advanced Training Studentships and Fellowships (http://www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/valores.phtml.en). Potentially, this value can be increased with Champalimaud Foundation internal funds, according to experience and, if renewed, with performance. The fellowship will be paid monthly by bank transfer. The fellowship holder will have a personal accident insurance and, if not covered by any social protection scheme, can ensure the right to social security through adherence to the voluntary social insurance scheme.

    Evaluation and Selection Process
    The candidate selections will be based on: curriculum evaluation (70%) and motivation letter (30%) based on the scale: Excellent (4), Good (3), Satisfactory (2), and Not suitable (0). If there is a draw in the score, an interview will be conducted and the assessments of previous advisors will be considered, as well as the potential contribution of the candidate to the laboratory.
